Sleep Deprivation and Technology

About a month ago I came across an article on the Tennessean about sleep deprivation and technology. I haven't been able to find it since I was reading it on my iPhone, but I found one that was kind of similar. It's really interesting!!

Reflection

When I think back on all the readings and projects we have done so far for this class I find the website to stick out the most. While they are all unique in their own way, the website (even though it's not completed) has stuck out the most to me. The way I picked a front runner was my time spent on each one. Yesterday I spent a total of 6 hours on my website and I never thought I'd say this, but it was fun. The website can be used in the classroom by everyone involved- teachers, parents, students, collaborating teachers, etc. It can also encompass every other thing we have done like a link to the portaportal, KWL charts, Picasa slide shows, blogs, etc. The website can improve students' learning by being a source to go to when they aren't in the classroom. They can go there for information on what is going on in class as well as for extra practice and activities.

According to the reading, I am not a part of the digital generation which makes me 'traditional.' While this was hard to accept, I can see through all of the readings that while it is sad, it is true that I am definitely not part of the digital generation. The technology method in teaching is definitely more effective. Before reading our book I would have said that a mix of technology and traditional method would be the most effective, but it's not. Technology is something that is present every day in students' lives and it's something us as teachers are going to have to embrace with open arms in our classrooms whether we like it or not. The most important thing about teaching is getting through to our students and technology has been proven to be a way to get through to them.

Mr. Winkle Wakes- Sad and True

I just viewed the video "Mr. Winkle Wakes" by Mathew Needleman on YouTube.
http://youtu.be/lm1sCsl2MQY

This video made me laugh at first just because the little cartoon man is so old looking. After I mulled over it for a little bit I realized that while the video is a bit humorous the first time through, the video holds so much truth! After waking up from being asleep for 100 years, Mr. Winkle discovers that there is technology EVERYWHERE (hospitals, work rooms, etc) except for when he goes to the school. He is very stressed out everywhere he goes because of all of the technology, but when he goes to school and realizes there's not any there he feels calm. (I just imagine what it would be like to teach my grandparents to use a computer and how stressed out and frazzled they would have been- just like Mr. Winkle)

In a way this video is sad and true because technology has made it's huge impact in the world in all places except for schools. Some schools do have more technology than others, but there are those schools that are still way behind. Also, after reading Chapters 3 & 4 in our book "Understanding the Digital Generation," Mr. Winkle represents us and everyone before us who isn't part of the digital generation. If I didn't feel old before this video, I definitely do now!

Schools and Creativity

I just watched Sir Ken Robinson's video on school and creativity on the TED website.
http://www.ted.com/talks/ken_robinson_says_schools_kill_creativity.html
Before reading the title I never thought creativity was important in the classroom. After watching his video on how he thinks "creativity is as important as literacy" I can only agree 100% with him. He also talked about how being 'wrong' has basically scared every one from school students to business people to branch out and be creative. He stressed that "If you're not prepared to be wrong, you'll never come up with anything original." Overall, I agreed with him. The only part I did not appreciate in this video was his ADHD jab. As a student with ADHD, hearing him say he's passionate about education and creativity and then making an ADHD joke turned me off.
This video will help me become a teacher by making me realize that creativity certainly is an important aspect in the classroom. It's sad that students have to worry about getting the 'right' answer and being scared of getting a 'wrong' answer. I don't want my students to "get educated out of creativity" as Sir Ken Robinson says. I will want my students to show creativity in every way they can in my classroom.
